Mariam has been flying for a major airline for 6 years. She's based in Dhaka and transits through Dubai, London, and New York regularly. Eight months ago, she signed up for the SBD Traveler Programme.
"I always had empty luggage allowance," she tells us. "I was going to the US four times a year and coming back half-empty. Now every trip pays."
SBD matches customers who need items carried with verified travellers on the same route. Items must be within airline luggage rules and pre-cleared for import. Mariam reviews the items in her queue, accepts what she's comfortable with, and drops them off at the SBD collection point at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport on arrival.
"Mostly beauty products. Small, light items. Perfume is the most popular. I've carried Dyson Airwraps a few times — they're bulky but well within limits. I've never had a problem at customs."
Mariam earns ৳800–৳2,000 per kg carried, depending on the item category. On a typical New York trip, she carries 4–6 kg of SBD items. That's ৳4,000–৳12,000 per trip — tax-free income on a journey she was making anyway.
"My last three trips combined, I made ৳85,000. It covered my sister's wedding dress."
